Horn Lake Middle School Parents:

Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 school year!  I know that this is a confusing time in our country due to the covid-19 situation, and it seems that the only thing that anyone can do - is what is best for themselves and their families.  With that in mind, whether you send your child to school in person or they stay at home doing virtual learning, just know that I am here to work with you to make this a successful educational year.  I am sure that with good communication, patience, understanding, and a willingness to work through the trials and errors that are bound to happen we will get through this together.

Thanks,

Ms. Huston

Horn Lake Middle School Students:

Welcome to 7th grade! I know that you are excited and so am I.  I look forward to having you in my classroom (in-person and virtually).  I know that  this Covid-19 situation is crazy, but we are going to just breathe and take everything one step at a time.  Just know that your parent(s)/guardian(s) and I want you to have a successful year here at HLMS.  Let us all just put our best foot forward and walk into a bright future together.  Remember this: you can't control many things, but you can control your outlook in life so stay POSITIVE!

See you soon,

Ms. Huston

Technology Information

Looking for access to software which will help your child succeed in their academic pursuits?  According to our tech department, "every student 6-12 has the ability to install the Microsoft Office Suite on up to 5 devices."  Here is the link for further instructions on how to make this happen.

Bio

Education
I attended Mid-South Community College where I received a Certificate of Proficiency in Media Broadcasting; I then transferred to the University of Memphis where I earned my bachelor's degree in Communications.  After working in the media world for a while, I chose to make teaching my profession; I returned to school to receive the necessary education and training to be a highly qualified teacher.

Experience
I didn't start out in the teaching profession.  When I graduated from the U of M, I was working full-time in the media field.   Eventually my time in that industry came to an end when technology caught up to my job.  I spent months considering my options about what I wanted to do with myself.  In May of 2009, I decided to become a teacher; I wanted to make a different in my community. I needed to be part of something bigger and better and just myself.

I have 7 years of teaching experience; I joined HLMS November of 2015 as a 8th grade teaching assistant.  When a teaching position opened up in January of 2016,  Mr. Toungett gave me a chance to join the teaching staff. I have been with the Eagles for four and a half years now.  I believe wholeheartedly that with the help of parents and the hard work of the students, we will make this a fabulous year for growth both personally and academically for everyone.

Bio
I am originally from Illinois, but I have lived the last 15+ years here in the mid-south.  My family and I live in Southaven, so I am only a hop and a skip from the school. I am a proud mom of two fur-babies: Bellatrix and Spanky-Oscar.

I love to travel.  I have been to NYC several times and got about 500+ pictures to prove it.  I have been to Greece on an educational trip.  I have been on family cruises. I was blessed with the opportunity to go on a missions trip to Jamaica; it was a eye-opening trip.  I think that traveling is amazing because it makes you realize that there is a ginormous world out there beyond your community and that you are not alone.  Traveling pushes you out of your comfort zone and encourages you to learn about other people, places, things, and yourself.  Traveling is an experience that will enrich your life.

I started walking 5k events in October of 2015; to date, I have walked dozens of IRL (in-real life) and virtual races.  Each year I set new goals when it comes to challenging myself both physically and mentally.  I want my students to not only see me accomplish my goals but also see me shatter them.  I expect my students to set goals each nine weeks, work hard, and shatter their own goals repeatedly.  I will do my best to lead by example.

This will be a fabulous year for growth both personally and academically!
